As part of Quarry Safety Week 2017, Lagan Cement decided to focus on vehicle safety in the quarry.

As part of raising awareness, the Quarry Team staged an accident between a site jeep and a loading shovel that is used in the quarry. The purpose of the event was to highlight the hazards associated with large quarry vehicles and the importance of vehicle safety. All Quarry Team Members were present at the event.

At the event, all Team Members were able to observe the damage that resulted. Following the event, Lagan Cement Plant Manager Declan Carr, Quarry Manager Alan Glennon, Quarry Line Manager Cathal Shine and Health and Safety Manager John McNamara held a safety discussion with all Team Members. Topics discussed included:

  • The dangers associated with Quarry vehicles
  • The importance of obeying site signage
  • The importance of concentration when operating site vehicles
  • The importance of maintaining site vehicles
  • The importance of visibility when operating vehicles
  • The consequences of injury that may follow if such an event were to occur
  • The associated rescue procedures

The damaged vehicle has been positioned on site for all employees to see for the remainder of Quarry Safety Week.
